Bhakti Baxter was born in Miami Florida in 1979 where he currently lives and works.
His work explores the intricate and symmetrical aspects of nature, translated through geometric terms. Investigating the territory amid science and spirituality, his practice aims to bridge a medial relationship between the seemingly ordinary and the interpretive freedom of abstraction. Working in a variety of media including collage, sculpture and drawing, Baxter’s goal is to disorient and disrupt accepted boundaries, as he questions common perceptions of the mundane.
Just as scientists formulate mathematical models to describe new theories about how the universe works, Baxter’s art interprets natural phenomena. He explores how the mind interacts with matter, while acknowledging the importance of exercising intuition to locate explanations.
Baxter has exhibited widely in the U.S. and internationally. Solo shows include Untitled ([construction of good]) at the Wolfsonian Florida International University, Miami Beach, FL, USA, in 2012; Rompelotas, at Gallery Diet, Miami, FL, USA, in 2011; Occupied, at Federica Schiavo Gallery, Rome, Italy, in 2010; After Certain Amounts of Breath at BravinLee Programs, New York, NY, USA in 2009; Introspective, at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris, France, in 2005; An Intelligible Sphere Whose Center Is Everywhere And Circumference Is Nowhere, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL, in 2002. His work will be presented in the exhibition New Work Miami 2013, at Miami Art Museum, FL, USA, 2012/2013.
